What is it?
In November 2021 the Asociación Española de Familiares y Enfermos de Wilson (AEFE de Wilson), the patient association for Wilson’s disease in Spain, hosted a rock concert featuring the band From Lost to the River to raise awareness of the condition.
Over 300 people attended; many of them said they had no previous knowledge of Wilson’s disease or the impact it can have on people’s lives.
During the concert, a number of people with Wilson’s disease were given the opportunity to go on stage, tell audience members about the condition, and talk about their experience of living with it.
Both the band and the venue that hosted the concert donated their services for free; all proceeds from the sale of tickets went towards AEFE de Wilson.
The success of the event was confirmed by a swathe of positive feedback, which indicated that audience members found it interesting to learn about Wilson’s disease.
What can we learn from this case study?
This concert was a creative and engaging example of awareness-raising. In hosting the concert, AEFE de Wilson successfully communicated to an audience that it may not have reached through more traditional advocacy activities.
Combining fun with awareness-raising can be an effective way to draw people into learning about a cause. Following the success of the concert, AEFE de Wilson is planning to host similar events, including a charity football match.
